What to Say :: Losing a Job

Everywhere you look there are stories upon stories of fantastic people who are losing their jobs courtesy of this horrific economic climate. Your good friends, your family members. You want to say something to make it all better, but what?

Well, in all honesty, there is probably nothing you can say to make it all better. But the bright side is, you aren’t expected to. You just have to be there for support. To let them know that they can count on you if they need help.

Emails are great. Handwritten notes are great. Phone calls are great. The point is, just reach out.

Keep your message short and make sure it includes:

1. A straightfoward acknowledgement of their current situation
2. Your unending support
3. Notice that you will be in touch soon. {And then follow through with it. Now is not the time to flake out.}

I’ve had to write a few of these notes myself recently…Here is the basic message. Of course, the finished note was changed up depending on the audience and the type of relationship I have with them ::

Dear xxx,

I just heard the news about your job. I am so sorry you were let go. I/we are here for you 24/7 if you need anything. I know you have lots of people to lean on, but please add me/us to that group. I’ll call you next week.

Take care,
Erin

Thank You Note Hell…I Mean Help

Since we posted our tips on staying connected in 2009 this morning, we’ve been hearing about how a lot of you are still focused on wrapping up your 2008 {2007?!}  correspondence. {Damn those stressful, guilt-inducing thank you notes!}

Instead of feeling guilty + making excuses, embrace the passing of time to write about how you are using the gift + why it’s changed your life for the better. For example…

“I’ve now used that fabulous tea kettle at least a dozen times and every time I use it I think of you!”

“Every time I wear the amazing necklace you gave me, I receive at least 10 compliments.”

It really is never too late to send a thank you. Plus, the person who bought you/your child  the gift probably knows you well enough to know to know you are very busy. So cut yourself some slack + use your renewed energy to pick up your pen and start writing.

Want more tips on what to say + how to say it? Click here for our Thank You Note 101

Still feeling pressed for time? It’s not too late to use our Mail-For-Me service. Just choose your card, type in your sentiment + we’ll handwrite and send the note for you. Easy peasy.

Pep Talk :: Staying Motivated To Keep In Touch

It’s the time of year when New Years Resolutions start to slide.  Your gym shoes are already gathering dust, it’s getting harder and harder to limit your Starbucks run to once a week, and you are lucky if you are catching 6 hours of sleep a night even though you promised you’d stick to {at least} eight.

You can’t help it. You are the busiest of all the busy people you know. But despite your hectic schedule, you still wish you had time to keep in touch.

Cut yourself some slack! It’s quality, not quantity. So leave the weekly notes/random check-ins to Facebook {fun!} and focus on handwriting an actual, paper note/card to everyone who is important to you once or twice a year.  It’s easy to make a big impact in just 5 minutes…Here are some ways to meet that quota ::

  • Birthday Card :: Everyone has a birthday, but not everyone sends cards.  You will stand out…
  • Anniversary Card :: Chances are you were at their wedding, so send them a note recounting that day while congratulating them on making it another year
  • Valentine’s Day Card :: Not just for your romantic interest.  Everyone loves to be someone’s sweetheart.
  • “I Was Reminded of You Today” Note :: These are often the fastest + most fun to write. People love knowing that you are thinking of them in your everyday life. And it only takes two or three sentences to let them know why you are writing.

Still feeling overwhelmed? Ease into the new you with our Mail-For-Me service. It’s your sentiment in our handwriting. Just as easy as typing out an email but the end result is oh-so-much-more-fabulous.

No matter how you decide to do it, it’s amazing how good it will feel to drop that envelope in the mail. Not to mention reading all those appreciative notes you’ll receive in return.

On Having a Dream…

Over the weekend, we had dinner with friends. Conversation quickly turned to the week ahead and, of course, the inauguration. During the course of the dinner, one person with two very young children made a comment that has stayed with me over the past few days. “What’s amazing to me is that my children won’t ever know a world where it’s even a question whether or not a person of color can be President of the United States.”

Pause. Wow. What an amazing thought. Especially as we take today to celebrate the man who really set the stage for such this momentous event, Martin Luther King, Jr.

So, while it’s not a day of greeting cards wishes, it is an important day to converse about the man behind the day + what he has done for all Americans. Whether it was opening doors or opening minds, he changed our world for the better.

A few interesting thoughts to share ::

  • In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and discrimination through non-violent means.
  • Towards the end of his life, he refocused his efforts on ending poverty
  • He was posthumously awarded the Presidental Medal of Freedom {1977} and Congressional Gold Medal {2004}
